The Best Scuba Diving App for Android
Search the Play Store for scuba and you'll find logbooks, planners and simulators that do very different jobs. Here's what each one is good for, and the one limit every phone shares.
The best all-round scuba diving app for Android is Diving Standard: a dive logbook, no-stop and nitrox planners, seven courses, live sea conditions and a community of sea lovers, in one free app. Subsurface and DiveMate are strong dedicated logbooks, Garmin Dive is the pick if you wear a Garmin, and Diveboard and Deepblu lean social. None of them turns your phone into a dive computer: you still need one in the water.
- Best all-rounder
- Diving Standard (free)
- Best pure logbook
- Subsurface, DiveMate
- Best for Garmin
- Garmin Dive
- In the water
- A real dive computer
The easiest way to choose is by the job you want done. Logging your dives, planning them, learning, checking the sea, connecting with other sea lovers. Some apps do one of those brilliantly. A few try to do all of them.
The apps, and who each one is for
Diving Standard
Best for: Logging, planning, learning and conditions in one free app
A logbook you can fill in ten seconds on the boat, with depth profiles, a 3D replay of the dive and insights when the data is there. No-stop, nitrox, gas and deco planners built on Bühlmann ZH-L16C with gradient factors. Seven illustrated courses, live sea conditions for any site, and a map of sea lovers near you and wherever you travel. It's a companion to your dive computer, not a replacement.
Subsurface
Best for: Free, open-source logging across brands
A powerful open-source logbook that imports from a long list of dive computers and keeps everything in your own file. Desktop-first, and loved by people who want control over their data.
DiveMate
Best for: A dedicated logbook with photos and notes
A popular logbook for Android and iOS for documenting dives with photos, video and notes, with transfer from compatible dive computers.
Diveboard
Best for: A free, cloud-based, social logbook
Upload profiles, photos, the species you saw and your buddies, and reach it from anywhere.
Deepblu
Best for: Finding sites and talking to dive shops
A log app built around discovering sites and planning trips from other divers' reviews, with Bluetooth sync for some dive computers.
Garmin Dive
Best for: Anyone diving with a Garmin watch
The companion app for Garmin dive watches. Great for reviewing your Garmin dives, not a general logbook for other brands.
Diving Standard is our app, so weigh this accordingly. We've tried to be fair about where the others win. Check each store page for current features and pricing.

The one thing no Android app can do
A phone can't run your dive. It has no depth sensor you can rely on, and you can't wear it on your wrist at 20 m. You still need a dedicated dive computer in the water. What a good Android app does is everything around the dive: plan it, log it, learn from it and share it. We go into the options in can an Android phone be a dive computer?
What to look for
- A quick log. After a dive you have wet hands and a minute. Ten seconds beats a form with forty fields.
- Planning maths you can see. Look for Bühlmann ZH-L16C and visible gradient factors, and treat any planner as a study aid, never a stand-in for your computer and training.
- Import, not retyping. Bringing dives across from a computer, another app or even a screenshot saves hours.
- The sea before you splash. Wind, swell, tide and water temperature decide whether a dive is worth doing.
- Your data stays yours. A PDF export and a way to delete your account in the app.
Our pick
For one free app that covers the logbook, the planner, the courses and the sea, Diving Standard on Android is built for exactly that. If you only want the deepest pure logbook, Subsurface is excellent. Dive with a Garmin? Use Garmin Dive alongside either.
