Scuba Diving Tools for Android

No-stop limits, nitrox, gas, weight and deco, in your pocket. What each planner answers, how the maths works, and where planning ends and diving begins.

Diving Standard for Android includes free scuba planning tools: a no-deco planner (Bühlmann ZH-L16C, with nitrox, altitude and repetitive dives), nitrox and MOD, a gas and SAC planner, scuba and freediving weighting, a deco planner, and a dive briefing and debrief. They're for planning on dry land. In the water you need a dive computer and the training to use it.

A planner answers the questions you ask before you get on the boat. How long can I stay at 18 m? Which nitrox mix suits this dive? Will my cylinder last with a proper reserve? How much lead do I really need? Here's what each tool in the Android app is for.

ToolThe question it answers
No-deco plannerHow long can I stay at this depth without a stop? Handles nitrox, altitude and repetitive dives
Nitrox and MODBest mix, maximum operating depth, ppO2 and equivalent air depth
Gas and SAC plannerHow much gas will I use, and what's a safe reserve?
Scuba weightingHow much lead for my suit, cylinder and water?
Freediving weightingHow much weight for my suit and target depth?
Deco plannerA staged decompression schedule to study
Dive briefingA clear plan to share with your buddy
Dive debriefWhat happened, and what to do differently next time

How the maths works

The no-deco, nitrox and deco planners use the Bühlmann ZH-L16C decompression model with gradient factors you can set. They're compiled from the same engine as the Apple Watch app, so the numbers agree whichever device you're holding. For the background, read how decompression planning works and what is nitrox.

Planning is not diving

Planners are for dry land. They teach, let you explore and produce schedules to study before a dive. In the water you need a dive computer measuring your real profile, and training for the dive you're doing. Diving Standard on Android does not measure depth or run a dive. Always dive within your training and follow your computer or tables.

A simple pre-dive routine

  1. Check the conditions: Wind, swell, tide and water temperature for your site.
  2. Plan the dive: Run the no-deco planner for your depth and time with a conservative gradient factor.
  3. Check your gas: Use the gas planner with your own SAC to confirm your reserve.
  4. Brief your buddy: Share the briefing, and agree turn pressures and signals.
  5. Dive your computer, not the app: Follow your computer in the water, then log the dive.

Frequently asked questions

Are there free scuba planning tools for Android?

Yes. Diving Standard includes a no-deco planner, nitrox and MOD, gas and SAC, weighting and a deco planner, free on Android.

Can I plan a dive on my phone?

Yes, for studying and checking numbers before a dive. In the water, follow a dive computer and your training.

What algorithm do the planners use?

Bühlmann ZH-L16C with gradient factors you can set, the model behind most modern dive computers.

Do the Android tools replace a dive computer?

No. They're planning tools. They don't measure depth or run a dive.
