The Best Snorkeling App for Android

Snorkelling is simple until the sea isn't. The Android apps that tell you when to go, how to stay safe, and help you remember what you saw.

The best snorkeling app for Android is one that tells you whether to get in. Diving Standard is free and rates wind, swell, tide and water temperature for snorkelling wherever you are, and adds a snorkelling course, a logbook that handles snorkel trips and a map of sea lovers nearby. The Viz App adds visibility reports from freedivers and snorkellers. For photos, a housing and a camera app do the rest.

Most of what makes a snorkel great, or miserable, is decided before you get wet. Wind blowing onto the shore, a swell rolling in, the tide pulling along the reef, water colder than you expected. That's where an app earns its place.

The apps, and what each one is for

Diving Standard

Best for: Whether to go, what to know and what you saw

Live sea conditions for where you are (wind, swell, sea temperature, tide and moon phase) with a verdict for snorkelling, a free snorkelling course, a logbook for snorkel trips and a community of sea lovers who share where they go. It isn't a snorkel GPS tracker.

The Viz App

Best for: Crowd-sourced visibility

Freedivers and snorkellers log the visibility and conditions they found. Handy for knowing what the water looked like yesterday.

DiveMate

Best for: A logbook with photos and notes

Built for scuba, but a flexible logbook if you want a record with pictures and notes.

Diving Standard is our app, so we're not neutral. Check each listing for current features.

A snorkeller's pre-swim check

  1. Check the wind and swell: Onshore wind and a big swell make getting in and out hard and stir up the water. Calm and offshore is best.
  2. Check the tide: Slack water is the easiest window at many spots. A strong tidal flow can carry you further than you meant to go.
  3. Check the water temperature: It decides your wetsuit. Cold tires you faster than you'd think.
  4. Never go alone: Snorkel with a buddy, wear a bright float or flag where it's needed, and stay near an easy exit.
  5. Watch the sky and the clock: Weather turns fast. Keep an eye on the time as well as the sea.

Snorkelling, scuba or freediving?

Not sure which suits you? Read snorkelling vs scuba diving. The free snorkelling course in the app covers gear, breathing, safety and marine life, and our scuba weight guide helps if you take the next step.
